Overview

After 17 years of the Maine Woods Initiative, AMC is working to achieve a landmark goal of owning and conserving 100,000 acres of the 100 Mile Wilderness region of Maine. Currently, AMC's 75,000-acre ownership merges landscape-scale conservation, purpose-built recreational infrastructure, responsible forest management, holistic environmental education, and community economic development to create a replicable model for other projects across the country. AMC's Director of Maine Conservation and Land Management, Steve Tatko will present the challenges and successes of the MWI project and how this initiative has grown into a one-of-a-kind approach to forestland conservation that is demonstrating new ways of investing in conservation to both mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure the health of regional economies and ecology. "Through the health of our forests we see the health of our communities."
