Overview

This program uses a group campsite at Seneca Shadows Campground in Seneca Rocks WV. It is intended for adults in good physical condition who prefer to tent camp where showers and flush toilets are nearby. We arrive anytime after 2:00 on Thursday and depart early on Monday morning for a half day hike. The program ends about 2:00 Monday afternoon. There is no cell service at the campground and limited service in the area. Hiking plan with more detail sent to registrants - 29 miles with 4,100' of elevation gain. The plan can be adjusted to suit the interests of the group. Thursday: For those who arrive by 4:00 PM, we will hike to the Seneca Rocks observation platform and back. 2.6 miles round trip with 740' of elevation gain Friday: All day hike to the northern portion of Dolly Sods. 7.2 miles round trip with about 900' of elevation gain on relatively easy but wet and rocky trails. May include a 2 mile bushwhack on easy open terrain. Saturday: All day hike from the top of Spruce Knob down as far as we want and return. 7.2 miles round trip to the Judy Springs Trail junction with 950' of elevation gain on moderately easy terrain. Sunday: All day hike on the Seneca Creek Trail and Judy Springs Trail and return. 2 stream crossings. 7.4 miles round trip with 980' of elevation gain on moderate terrain. Note that the Judy Springs Trail is short and steep. Monday: Morning hike to the Rohrbaugh Overlook in Dolly Sods Wilderness. 4.6 miles round trip with 530' of elevation gain on easy terrain. To ensure your safety and enable you to join us on this hike, you must register here on the AMC Activities Database web site, complete the liability waiver form, and have your registration confirmed by this activity's AMC Chapter Leader. You will be notified by email when you are confirmed as a participant. ANYONE NOT RECEIVING A REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION FROM THIS ACTIVITY'S LEADER WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO JOIN THE GROUP AT THE TRAILHEAD. AN RSVP ON MEETUP IS NOT CONSIDERED BEING REGISTERED FOR THIS ACTIVITY - THAT CAN ONLY BE ACCOMPLISHED HERE ON THE AMC ACTIVITY DATABASE WEB SITE. In the event that social distancing (6 feet) cannot be maintained during this activity, every participant must have a suitable medical or cloth mask made of two layers of fabric with them which covers their nose and mouth that they can use. Moderate: Fitness level and/or past experience to sustain the activity at a moderate pace is required. Expect to be active up to 4-6 hours per day. Reasonable breaks in the action. *There is no cost for this AMC program but this fee is to reimburse the leader for your share of the campground fee. After you have sent in your preregistration form the leader will send you instuctions on how to pay. Once your reimbursement has been made you will be confirmed to participate. Refund Policy - No refunds will be given unless the program is cancelled and that refund will be net of the campground cancellation fee. Excess fees collected will be donated to the Potomac Chapter AMC.
