Post-Thanksgiving Hike on Avon Land Trust Trails to Heublein Tower ~ 7 miles

Date and Time

Friday, November 27, 2020, 10:00AM - 1:30PM

Nod Way, Avon, CT 06001,
Connecticut, West of River,
CT United States

Registration is required for this activity.

This is a redux of the popular workout hikes at this location on 11/6 and 11/17, except that we will go at a slightly slower pace (2.5 mph/25 min/mile) and add on the red and blue trails for a total of 7 miles. We will meet at 10 am. The white, blue, and red trails of the Avon Land Trust property are hillside woodland trails with regular ups and downs, leaf litter, rocks, roots, and other natural obstacles typical of long abandoned area farms. After we complete this loop, we will climb to the tower on the steep blue/yellow trails. Total elevation gain for this hike is about 1000 feet, with most of it occuring in the mile climb to the ridgeline, where if the weather is clear, we will have some beautiful views. This hike is NOT appropriate for beginners. Hiking boots or trail shoes are necessary. Bring poles if you use them, and microspikes if it's icy. Dress in layers, eat breakfast, and bring at least 32 oz of water and ~1000 kcal of nourishment. We will break at the top (~5 miles) and briefly along the way. This is a much longer and steeper way to the tower than others, so good physical conditioning is necessary, as well as the ability to descend via slightly softened switchbacks. One experienced trail dog is welcomed, but please check with leader in advance. For a map of our hike: (except we are only doing a small portion of yellow) go to It is the Metacomet Ridge Trails map. Just a reminder: we are not meeting at the state park access area to the tower, or the reservoir. We are on the other side of the mountain. Participants will get an email by 8 am on the morning of the event if there are any changes due to weather or trail conditions.
