Date and Time

Friday, February 19, 2021 11:00AM - Monday, February 22, 2021 2:00PM

Horton Trailhead Whitmer WV,
West Virginia,

Registration is required for this activity.

This program is held in the Monongahela National Forest along Gandy Creek near Whitmer WV. We will backpack or use sleds to drag our gear 3-6 miles along the unplowed forest road with minimal elevation gain and set up a base camp. From that base camp we will go out on 2 days of snowshoe hikes into the Seneca Creek Backcountry. This location features camping at 3,100' with hiking up to 4,200' in elevation. Very cold temperatures are expected. No heated shelter is available. Our focus on this trip is more about teaching safe wilderness winter camping and hiking skills than bagging a summit. We may have to melt snow for water. We have had winter trips where we spent all 4 days breaking trail in beautiful surroundings but never got close to a summit. This program is open to families with children as young as 16. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and have the same gear and experience requirements as adults. Moderate: Fitness level and/or past experience to sustain the activity at a moderate pace is required. Expect to be active up to 4-6 hours per day. Reasonable breaks in the action. This trip requires previous winter hiking and camping experience in cold temperatures. All participants will need snowshoes, a winter sleeping bag rated to at least -20 degrees F and have winter boots with a removable liner. No single layer or leather boots will be approved. Under other on the registration form, please list what sleeping bag and boots you have or that you need our advice on what to get. Leaders will be using mountaineering sleds and we have some spare sleds we can loan out. Please review the gear list attachment for more information about gear. For purposes of this program crampons and ice axes will not be required. In the event that social distancing (6 feet) cannot be maintained during this activity, every participant must have a suitable medical or cloth mask made of two layers of fabric with them which covers their nose and mouth that they can use.

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.
