Overview

Guyot Campsite, located on the edge of the Pemigewasset Wilderness, is looking for new Information Volunteers. These volunteers assist the campsite Caretaker by greeting guests in a friendly manner, orienting them to the facility, helping them set up camp, sharing information about trails and weather conditions, and advising visitors about hiking plans. Essential qualifications: recent experience backpacking and backcountry camping in the White Mountains, including hiking trails near Guyot Campsite; general knowledge about outdoor gear, camping, and backcountry safety; and an outgoing, friendly personality. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, AMC members, and pass a criminal background check. A 2-person backpacking tent is stored on-site and available for volunteers to use. A backpacking stove, cooking gear, and fuel will also be available. Volunteers are responsible for bringing the rest of the gear they need (sleeping bag, warm clothing, water treatment, etc.), as well bringing and cooking their own food and packing out their own trash. Guyot Volunteers are welcome to bring a guest for free and/or to stay an extra night for free. Is volunteering at Guyot right for you? Guyot is in the backcountry, on the edge of the Pemigewasset Wilderness. It's a beautiful area and a great base from which to access 5 nearby 4,000 footers with amazing views! The shortest route in to access Guyot is about 7.5 miles, including a mix of easy/moderate/steep terrain. Guyot Campsite is spread out on a steep hillside below the ridge, with rock staircases accessing various parts of the campsite. If you're comfortable and confident with the long approach hike, with backpacking/backcountry camping, and with moving up and down a lot of rock stairs while volunteering (and staying energetic and friendly while you do so) then this volunteer role could be a great fit for you! Schedule: Guyot Information Volunteers volunteer on weekends in summer and early fall, arriving late afternoon on Friday or Saturday morning and departing mid-day on Sunday. Commitment: Commit to volunteering at least 32 hours per year, for at least three years. Most people volunteer two weekends a year. Participate in training each spring for the first two years as a volunteer, and once every three years after that. 2021 Training: Training sessions will be held online in late spring. Application Process: Request an application by emailing Kyra Salancy at amcvolservices@outdoors.org
