Hiram to Cornish, Maine,
Maine, Western,
ME
Weather, water, and pandemic restrictions permitting, let's make an early start to the 2021 paddling season! Covid Note: This section is easily shuttled with a bicycle. We will be strictly maintaining all requires social distancing protocols. Group size will be limited. The Ossipee River from Hiram, ME to the first bridge above Cornish is a good early-season run. It paddles well at all levels from low water to full-on flood. This starts with a lively Class 2 section. From there, stretches of flatwater separate short Class 2 (and one Class 2+) rapids. Paddlers MUST have either a wetsuit or a drysuit for safety (the water will be COLD!), and you'll probably want a helmet liner, and gloves, mittens or pogies. You'll also need a whitewater-capable boat with flotation (mandatory), Open canoe, C1, kayak and WW inflatables are all welcome. Kayaks and C1s must have a tight-fitting sprayskirt. Rental boats are available with advanced planning (see link below). All paddlers must wear a helmet and PFD at all times while on the water. Contact the leader for meeting time and place.
