New Jersey, Delaware Water Gap,
Join me for a beginner, friendly woman's only backpacking trip to kick-off spring! Climb out of the dramatic Delaware Water Gap through mixed hardwood forests to Sunfish Pond, an ecologically unique glacial pond carved during the last ice age. Skirt the rocky outcrops along the pond's northern edge, and continue along a forested ridge until the trees thin out and afford a beautiful 360-degree view, with the river snaking its way through the patchwork of fields. Saturday: take Appalachian Trail (AT) northbound to the Backpacker Site near Sunfish Pond, claim spots and set up camp, hiking to Sunfish Pond with the potential to hike further depending on group comfortability to the grassy balds at the edge of Worthington State Forest, then return to camp and make dinner (3.7 mi with full packs, 8.1 mi with light packs). Please be aware that we will be camping in an active bear country area but bear boxes will be used for all food and smellables. Sunday: return to our cars via AT, and Dunnfield Creek Trail (3 mi with full packs). Pace: Moderate (1.5 - 2 mi/hr). Terrain: AT to Sunfish Pond: well maintained, gradually but constantly climbing, rising out of the Delaware Water Gap. AT from Sunfish Pond to Edge of State Forest: Rolling traverse along the Northern edge of a ridge top. The trail here is somewhat rocky in places. Daily distances: Saturday potentially 12 mi, Sunday 3, total 15.0 mi. Experience Level: intermediate day hikers, beginner backpackers. WOMEN ONLY! Group size limited. A screening call will be required. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the AMC Delaware Valley Chapter has adopted the following policies based on assessment of state and local regulations in the region and CDC guidelines: 1) Masks should be worn for the entire duration of the activity. If a mask must absolutely be removed due to physical exertion, a minimum of 6 feet distance must be maintained. Mask use must be maintained after vaccination. 2) No one should cross state lines for an activity. 3) No activities should be held in the City of Philadelphia. 4) The volunteer leader has the right to remove anyone from the activity that is not following these policies. 5) These policies will be modified upon change in local regulations.
