Canoe&Kayak Stunning Smoke Hole Canyon Weekend in WVA Cl 1+-2-

Date and Time

Friday, April 2, 2021 - Monday, April 5, 2021

Smoke Hole Canyon, S. Branch of Potomac River near Trough General Store, WVA,
West Virginia,

Registration is required for this activity.

West Virginians are justly proud of this their South Branch of the Potomac. It is one of the most beautiful river trips in the whole state, if not the region. This is a classic paddle along a beautiful canyon that features massive rock formations, where we will select from three not-quite whitewater sections. You can read up on these sections in American Whitewater under South Branch of the Potomac, US 220 Bridge to Harmison's Landing, near Romney. We expect about 4 hours of paddling each day. Have plenty of quick-dry non-cotton layers and at least farmer johns wet suit or splash jacket and pants as April weather and waters can be cold. We specially designed this trip as a way to step up rising Leaders in Training in paddling programs from two AMC chapters. So, this is a great chance to meet new friends! LITs will practice selecting put-ins and take-outs, welcoming and instructing participants on river guidelines, and generally using astute judgment for all to have a safe, great time in this heavenly spot. Some sharing of tandem canoe boats and partners may be possible. Kayakers or canoeists attending must have knowledge of maneuvering in moving water and standing waves, and solo canoeists should have solid class 2 experience. Priority will be given to LITs at registration. So sign up as soon as possible to guarantee your spot! Arrive Friday night at Spring Gap Campground where we have safely spread out over several group sites, even for this COVID-capped trip of 10 folks maximum. The extremely affordable campsite has bathrooms & showers, but be prepared that on this opening season weekend, water may not be operating. We have a safe campfire only site set aside, of course. Provide meals on your own cooking stove, but we can provide advice or loaner stoves or campfire grill to assist you. Spring Gap Campground is a Chesapeake & Ohio National Historical Park in Maryland, but would still be only an hour or under in driving distance from any of the 3 sections that will best suit the group's skills and fun factors.
