Join us in Upton State Forest as we team up with the New England Orienteering Club to learn about the exciting sport of Orienteering! Orienteering is timed event where you navigate through the woods (using a compass and a map) from control point to control point. Worried you don't have navigational skills or they are a bit rusty? No worries! We will spend the first part of the day learning these skills. Part 1: Learn the basics. How to use a compass for navigation. How to read a map and plan a route. Part 2: Group course navigation. Part 3: Try it on our own! Please plan to be outside for 3-4 hours. Dress for the weather and bring snacks and water, along with a compass (preferably with a clear base plate), printed maps, and gallon ziploc to keep your maps dry. You need to bring and wear a facemask the entire hike and bring hand sanitizer. We will comply with Governor Baker's order, effective November 6, to wear facemasks during the entire hike even when social distancing is maintained. You may want to bring a spare in case you want to change masks during the hike. Prior to the event, you will be sent a link to the New England Orienteering Club where you will be asked to pay $5 and then download and print your own maps (in full color). You will need to print 2 for the class, and are welcome to print as many additional courses are you are interested in trying. Home - The New England Orienteering Club
