AMC offers COVID conscious opportunities to enjoy the outdoors locally, visit many of our lodges and campgrounds, and join virtual events and activities. Participants of all in-person events should bring and wear face coverings, expect social distancing, and changes to our usual practices. To support contact tracing and hands-free signing of the AMC liability waiver, online registration is required for all in person AMC events.

Novice Backpacking Workshop for Adults w/Overnight Backpack-Group #4

Date and Time

Friday, May 21, 2021 5:00PM - Monday, May 24, 2021 12:00PM

Summit Bechtel Reserve Glen Jean WV,
West Virginia,

Registration is required for this activity.

This is a three night program for novices who want to build their hiking and camping skills and then go on an overnight backpack. It consists of pre program course content and camping in the relative safety of the 11,000 acre Summit Bechtel Reserve. The overnight backpack may be on Reserve property or nearby in the New River Gorge National Park. At present we are the only group that will be at the facility. Please note that this is a reworked version of the program that was to have been held in the Monongahela National Forest until they decided to cancel all group campsites reservations for 2021. Unlike the previous location the first two nights camping will be in a location that has running water, flush toilets and showers. This location features an Amtrak station in nearby Prince WV serviced by the Cardinal line from NYC to Chicago with stops in DC and along the route. Contact the leader if you need more information about this travel option. Please note that we are only using the facility for hiking, camping and backpacking. We will not be using any of their many other high adventure program offerings. **Please note that Will Schaefer & Alkesh Mistry are backpacking leaders in training under the supervision of Carey Butler who is the leader of record.** Participants will need to bring their own tents, sleeping bags appropriate for the season, pads, backpack and bear canister/Ursack. Your leaders will help advise you if you don't already have this gear. In the event that social distancing (6 feet) cannot be maintained during this activity, every participant must have a suitable medical or cloth mask made of two layers of fabric with them which covers their nose and mouth that they can use. Moderate: Fitness level and/or past experience to sustain the activity at a moderate pace is required. Expect to be active up to 4-6 hours per day. Reasonable breaks in the action. CARPOOLING: Due to the inherent risk from the COVID 19 virus, carpooling is not recommended at this time. In addition to the AMC waiver, everyone will need to fill out a waiver form for the facility. For more information prior to registering, please contact the leader.

I'm a retired sixty-something who enjoys being outdoors and exploring the wilderness. I've been leading small group adventures throughout Appalachia for more than twenty years. I like working with beginners and novices to help them develop their skills and confidence. Wilderness First Aid certified.

For years I have cozied up in AMC huts and lodges for mountaineering, backpacking, mountain biking, and paddling adventures. Being a new AMC volunteer trip leader, I look forward to exploring new woods and waterways and sharing the experiences with others.
