Lost River State Park, WVA. The Cranny Crow/Big Ridge hike is a combination of a loop and out/back-hiking. With Cranny Crow, Cheeks Rock, and the Big Ridge vistas, and ridge meadow, this hike has beautiful scenery around every corner in its trail system. Approximately 6 -7miles, 4-5hours. Hiking start from the lower parking area at Howard's Lick trailhead, cross the small suspension bridge intersection of the state park road to blue blazed Howard's Lick trail and footbridge to the upper parking area. Turn right up the unblazed service road to the intersection of Big Ridge Trail. Continue following the service road as it makes a sharp left continuing for another to the intersection of the orange blazed White Oak Trail. Turn right on the White Oak Trail, then passes a small shelter/overlook. From here, the White Oak Trail will make several switchbacks before ending at the junction of the Millers Rock Trail and Ridge. Turn right on the yellow blazed Millers Rock Trail, and arrive at Cranny Crow overlook [suggested lunch stop] in 200 yards - Millers Rock Trail - and pass several more overlooks of Lost River State Park, including Cheeks Rocks, before reaching the intersection of the orange blazed Virginia View Trail. Turn left on the Virginia View Trail to the junction of the yellow blazed Big Ridge Trail. [Optional lunch break, Turn left uphill for short distance to the high meadow, large shelter area.] Turn right on Big Ridge Trail to the service road then turn left back down the blue blazed Howard's Lick Trail to the lower parking area. Yay… we made it with lots of fun. The pace of this hike will be moderate. We will start and finish as a group. In addition, all participants must abide by COVID-19 precautions. We will follow AMC COVID-19 requirements, which are consistent with local state guidelines. Group size is limited and activities are often waitlisted, so please cancel your registration if you can no longer attend or are not feeling well. Online registration is required. AMC membership is not required, but you will need to set up a free AMC online account if you do not already have one. Click "Register" button to accept the risks, provide contact info, and sign the AMC liability waiver. Each person must register individually; you cannot register for a friend or household member. Once the request is received, a hike leader will be in touch regarding the next steps. Only hikers whose status is updated to "Confirmed" may participate in the hike.
