Overview

This event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in 2020 had to be canceled last year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. For 2021, we celebrate Earth Day Fifty Plus One with our traditional clean up hike on the Appalachian Trail at Lehigh Gap! The first Earth Day is credited with launching the modern environmental movement. Come out and celebrate Earth Day with the AMC-DV! Hopefully you have heard about Leave No Trace and how important it is for protecting the environment (if not, please ask). In support of the conservation mission of Earth Day and the Appalachian Mountain Club, we are taking our efforts a step further and "Erasing the Trace." While we enjoy a hike on the famous Appalachian Trail with "rocksylvania" terrain of the south trail, budding leaves, and spectacular views, we can also maintain that beauty by picking up items that don't belong, left behind by others. This hike begins with steep elevation and rocky footing. It includes a one mile traverse across a boulder field to test your agility. Pace will be moderate as we take time to take in views and take out trash. Total distance will be about 8 miles. Participants must bring 2 liters of water, and bring snacks and a lunch. Appropriate footwear is required. Bring trash bags if you can, but we will have extras. It is recommended that you bring your own gloves. Face masks and hand sanitizers are required. Due to COVID restrictions, group size will be limited to 10 participants, including leaders. Please contact leaders Jeff Fritzinger (jfritz110@gmail.com) or Barbara Fritzinger (equeyaya@gmail.com) for details.
