AMC offers COVID conscious opportunities to enjoy the outdoors locally, visit many of our lodges and campgrounds, and join virtual events and activities. Participants of all in-person events should bring and wear face coverings, expect social distancing, and changes to our usual practices. To support contact tracing and hands-free signing of the AMC liability waiver, online registration is required for all in person AMC events.

Jump Start Your Canoe Skills! Special Invite to folks in the Black Indigenous & People of Color (BIPOC) and Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Communities. Get ready for upcoming canoe trips by learning how to successfully maneuver your tandem canoe on lakes and ponds. You will learn to propel your boat forwards and backwards, turn and slide sideways, and stop. You will also learn basic safety techniques including self-rescue and assisted rescue if a boat overturns. Plus, you will learn to safely cartop your canoe.. The foundational skills you acquire this weekend will prepare you for flatwater water trips on NYS Adirondack lakes and gentle current river trips in the NJ Pine Barrens; both are popular events offered by the AMC NY-NoJ chapter this year. If you plan to paddle on swiftly moving current, this course will prepare you for the Moving Water Instruction classes.. Participants are encouraged to arrive Friday afternoon to set up camp on tent platforms and enjoy the facilities at the Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center. Instruction will be a full day on Saturday. If there is interest, an optional offsite river paddle may be offered on Sunday. Participants must be comfortable swimming unassisted in deep water and help lift canoes. All boating equipment will be provided. Camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad) may be borrowed. Public transportation and camp shuttle is available. Course includes Instruction, 2 nights camping, Saturday breakfast, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast, and Volunteer Leadership.
