Enjoy the spectacular beauty of Glacier National Park, Montana on day hikes, accompanied by naturalists from the Glacier Institute (GI). This annual AMC Adventure Travel favorite fills quickly, so apply early. We will explore the geology, ecology, wildlife and wildflowers of this vast and pristine ecosystem often referred to as the "Crown of the Continent". Our hikes will cover 7 to 12 miles most days, over moderate to strenuous terrain at a moderate pace, with learning stops along the way. Total group size will be 22 AMCers (including leaders), split into two hiking groups per day on different trails. Each hiking group will have a Glacier Institute Staff Naturalist along. On some hikes we will be joined by an additional outside expert who will educate us on topics related to that day's trail (wildflowers, wildfire ecology, etc.). Two evening educational programs will be offered in camp. Housing is in GI's rustic (basic) hostel-style cabins in the western part of the Park. There are five single beds per one room cabin. A short walk leads to nearby building with bathrooms and with hot showers. Meals are eaten together in camp, outdoors. Good overall fitness and recent hiking experience is required, as we will be hiking on six consecutive days. The hikes are moderate to strenuous, but we will have stops for learning and to catch our breath, taking in views along the way. The sights and experiences in this special place are truly unforgettable.
