Canoe&Kayak, Basecamping on a Hudson River Island

Date and Time

Wednesday, June 23, 2021 - Friday, June 25, 2021

Stockport. NY,
New York, Catskills,

Registration is required for this activity.

We'll basecamp on a wild island that has ducked civilization although being surrounded by it. This island is just North of the City of Hudson, NY. Basecamp is only ~2 mi. from the launch. Day paddle options: (1) Stockport Creek & into Stockport Marsh, (2) visit a waterfront shanty town established in the late 1800s & an 1894 lighthouse and (3) visit the 1885 R. W. Scott Hudson River Icehouse and Rattlesnake Island. We might even squeeze in a stop at Coxsackie's Riverfront Open Market for a craft beer & snacks. Or you could just lollygag at basecamp and swim from the sandy beach. This outing is for experienced paddlers who feel comfortable paddling with tugs, large barges & ocean-going freighters. Sometimes the water gets rough. Be prepared to cross the river. Sea touring kayaks with dual bulkheads and at least 13.5 ft. long are required. Canoes are acceptable as long as the paddler(s) are able to keep up with the faster kayaks. Kayakers must bring bilge pumps & spray skirts. Whatever you're paddling, you'll need to bring an extra paddle, first aid kit, food, drinking water and all the necessary camping gear, including a stove. There are no shelters, but there's a very nice outhouse. The island is wild; we will practice Leave No Trace principles. PFDs must be worn while on the water. Please review the Club's Covid-19 guidelines when registering. Registration begins 6/1/21 and ends on 6/16/21. Joint with ADK. Group size limited, so register early.

I've led outings since the late 1970s for Sierra Club, Catskill 3500 Club, Adirondack Mtn. Club, Appalachian Mtn. Club & Mohonk Preserve. I currently lead for the latter 3 clubs. On water, I lead day paddles & paddling/camping trips by canoe & kayak. I prefer leading overnights.
