Overview

This is an easy three-night bike-packing trip covering 35 miles on the Pine Creek Rail Trail through the scenic Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. Melting glaciers carved the gorge, which runs 800-1,400 feet deep and a mile wide. A natural travel route through northern Pennsylvania for American Indians, the gorge in 1883 became the route of the Jersey Shore, Pine Creek and Buffalo Railway-later named Pine Creek Railway-that served lumber companies that clear-cut the mountainsides. The last freight passed through in 1988, and the trail was born in 1996 and extended to its present length in 2012. We'll be using free trailside campgrounds maintained by the PA DCNR with picnic tables, fire rings, potable water and restrooms. Mountain or Hybrid bikes only. Hybrid bikes must have tire tread suitable for this mostly packed gravel rail trail. Helmets, gloves, high visibility vest, spare tube & repair parts are required along with backpacking gear that you can safely carry riding a bike. Backpacks, paneers or trailers are suitable for this trip. If you are new to bike-packing, you should practice riding with your gear in advance. To protect your food from wildlife, you must have either a bear canister or a Ursack. The 10-person crew, including leaders, will meet at the Darling Run Access Area near Ansonia, PA, on Friday, September 17, for a 3pm departure. We'll bike about 8 miles and camp at the Tiadaghton Campground. We'll take a short side hike at about 3.5 miles to see the waterfalls along the Turkey Path trail below Leonard Harrison State Park. On Saturday, we'll bike 10 miles and camp at the Hoffman Campground, returning to the Tiadaghton Campground on Sunday, and finishing the trip Monday morning around noon. This out and back trip covers the most scenic portion of the Pine Creek Gorge with only one street crossing in the town of Blackwell. As we are not covering a lot of distance each day, there will be plenty of time to explore areas of interest or just watch the creek roll by. This trip is contingent upon the leaders acquiring the necessary PA DCNR camping permits, which must be requested less than 90 days prior to the event.

Leader

I grew up hiking in state parks, national forests, and wilderness areas throughout West Virginia and have been backpacking since 2015, including three section hikes on the AT in Virginia. I am interested in exploring out-of-the-way places, helping women gain confidence to be outdoors, and providing a means for everyone to experience extended trips in the wilderness. We humans need to spend time in nature in order to protect it and understand our connection with it.
