Overview

Designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site, the Canadian Rockies mountain range spans the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. With jagged, ice-capped peaks, including towering Mt. Robson, it's a region of alpine lakes, diverse wildlife and outdoor recreation sites. Yoho National Park is home to the massive Takakkaw Falls. Other national parks are Jasper, with the famously accessible Athabasca Glacier, and Banff, site of glacier-fed Lake Louise. During this 11-day family adventure we will spend three nights in Banff National Park in the Lake Louise area, with a day at Yoho National Park in British Columbia to explore the Iceline. We will hike in some of the most amazing scenary, including a trip up to Sentinal Pass, the highest maintained trail in the Rockies and the famous Lake Louise area and Chateau Lake Louise. Then we will drive north to Jasper National Park up the Icefields Parkway, a 143 mile highway that parallels the Continental Divide, passing numerous glaciers, forested river valleys, and jaw-dropping views of mountains and bright turquoise lakes given their hue from glacial particles suspended in water. We will stay four nights in Jasper National Park, exploring, hiking, and enjoying all of the outdoors sports the area has to offer, including Maligne Lake and the Edith Cavell Glacier and Meadow. The final two days will be spent in the town of Banff, a spirited place, alive with adventure and wonder. In all directions you're surrounded by strikingly beautiful and rugged mountains that seem to burst straight out of the ground. You might see a herd of deer or elk wandering down the main street in the morning. Wildlife abounds in all the areas we will visit, including grizzly and black bears, elk, moose, big-horn sheep, hoary marmots and more. It is not atypical to see wildlife in front of your cabin in the morning, grazing on the grass. Wildlife encounters are also common on the hiking trails. This adventure travel trip is geared towards adults and children who have had previous hiking experience. Most hikes will be between 5-8 miles, with elevation gains of up to 2,000 feet. Although the pace will be child-friendly and the trails are typically much easier to navigate than trails back east, some of the days will be longer than others. We will also be hiking at elevations of 6-7,500 feet. We will expect that parents will ensure that they and their children will stay in good hiking shape and commit to doing some hiking prior to the trip. Children in packs are welcome.
