Overview

Let's Hike Owl's Head Mountain Have you been training, getting some hikes under your belt, and gearing up for a longer hike this summer? Are you working on your NH 4K list? Have you skipped Owl's Head because you're intimidated by the mileage? If so, this may be the hike for you. Owl's Head is one of the harder to get to single 4,000 foot peak in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The quickest route to the summit is 9.1 miles (one-way) into the heart of the Pemigewasset Wilderness. There will be some flat hiking from the Lincoln woods trail, but ends with a quick and steep ascent on the rockslides on Owl's Head that face the east side of Franconia Ridge. Though this is a long all-day hike, the views on the slide are fantastic, and the Lincoln Brook Trail is a beautiful path along the river with gorgeous rock formations. We will be rock hopping across the water crossings. 2 poles are a good idea to help with stability. After hiking the first 8 miles, we will come to the extremely steep Owl's Head Slide. The Slide is 1.1 miles long and very steep over loose rocks. Please be comfortable ascending and descending this terrain. This will be an all day event. We will be hiking 18.2 miles round trip with 2,992 feet elevation gain to Owl's Head summit at 4,025 feet. Plan to hike an average of 2 mph. We will be taking breaks along the way. Headlamps with extra batteries are required for this trip. Full gear list: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Dayhike_gear_list.pdf We will not require the use of face masks on this trip, following the rescinding of restrictions by MA and NH, but everyone should bring a mask in case social distancing isn't possible or someone on the trip exhibits symptoms. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
