Overview

Come join Mike and Jim for four days and three nights of front and back country ski touring in the Maine Woods! Home base will be rustic cabins at the West Branch Ponds Camps. Each day we'll head out in two groups: a "front country" group led by Mike that will glide along low and medium pitched trails that have been expertly groomed by our host Eric and his friendly team, and a "back country" group led by Jim seeking out some steeper terrain, trail blazing and bushwhacking as we explore the nearby bowls and peaks. If you have the appropriate equipment and skills, you are welcome to join whichever group suits your fancy that day! Each night we'll reconvene at WBPC and enjoy a hearty dinner and breakfast the next morning in the communal dining room as we swap stories about the day's adventures. If tracked skiing is your thing, bring your light classic touring XC skis and boots (such as Fischer Superlight with 48-44-46 profile) and be ready to ski 10-15 miles and up to 1,000' of vertical each day. If you want to hang with the back country crowd, bring your wider 55-70mm metal edged skis, gaiters, and climbing skins (or at least kicker skins) for the uphill sections, and expect 6-10 miles and up to 1,500' of vertical each day. See link below for a suggested packing list. Of course, due to variable weather and snow conditions, the leaders will adjust the itinerary as needed each day for the safety and enjoyment of the group. We'll meet in Greenville, ME at noon on Thursday, Feb 3 and leave Greenville by noon on Sunday, Feb 6, so that you'll be able to make the 4.5hour drive from Boston leaving early Thursday morning early and getting back to Boston by Sunday night. Carpools will be facilitated. Regarding COVID, participants do need to be comfortable with sharing a cabin with 3-4 others and eating in a communal dining room. We will encourage folks to spread out to the extent possible, but we cannot guarantee 6' spacing at all times. We welcome the use of masks, but note they are not required. As of now, AMC doesn't require or ask vaccination status, but that may change by the time of the trip.

Jim Hutchinson got hooked on backcountry skiing doing day trips in the foothills of the Tetons in Jackson Hole, as well as week-long tours to the 10th Mountain Huts in Colorado. He thinks NH and ME are ok places to ski as well, and he is a leader for both Skiing and 3-Season Hiking/Backpacking.
