Overview

This backpack will be held in the Ha-De-Ron-Dah Wilderness near Old Forge NY. We will backpack or use sleds to drag our gear 3-6 miles on the Big Otter Lake East Trail and set up a base camp. From that base camp we will go out on 2 days of snowshoe hikes. This location is in one of the snowiest areas of NY where subzero conditions are likely. Our focus on this trip is more about teaching safe wilderness winter camping and hiking skills than bagging a summit. We may have to melt snow for water. We have had winter trips where we spent all 4 days breaking trail in beautiful surroundings but never got close to a summit. This trip requires previous winter backpacking experience in cold temperatures. Preference given to participants the leaders know. All participants will need snowshoes, a winter sleeping bag rated to at least -20 degrees F and have winter boots with a removable liner. No single layer or leather boots will be approved. Under other on the registration form, please list what sleeping bag and boots you have or that you need our advice on what to get. Leaders will be using mountaineering sleds and we have some spare sleds we can loan out. Please review the gear list attachment for more information about gear. For purposes of this program crampons and ice axes will not be required. **Rich Armington is a backpacking leader in training under the supervision of David Mong who is the leader of record.** In the event that social distancing (6 feet) cannot be maintained during this activity, every participant must have a suitable medical or cloth mask made of two layers of fabric with them which covers their nose and mouth that they can use.

Leader

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.

Leader

I have led outings since the late 1970s for a variety of clubs, e.g. Sierra, Catskill 3500, Adirondack Mtn. Club, Mohonk Preserve & Appalachian Mtn. Club. These have included day hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, x-c skiing, cabin trips, day paddles & paddling/camping trips in canoes or kayaks. I particularly enjoy leading overnights. I like sharing my knowledge, as well as, learning from others.

I've been hiking and backpacking pretty much my entire life. I've planned and executed adventure trips for groups, including Scouts for years. My goal is to spend as much time off the pavement as possible. My challenge is to convince others to join me.
