The mountain villages and pine forests of the Peneda-Geres National Park (Portugal's only national park) is a fitting locale to begin our 7-night bicycling journey that will take us from the mountains to the sea. Along our path we will delight in the country villages within this stunning region steeped in history, culture and cuisine. We will ride 25-30 miles each day and plan to use e-bikes to help us navigate ascents while leaving us plenty of energy to explore the day's destination. While on our way we will visit lush valleys and seaside villages. We will bike along miles of white-sand beaches with their colorful shore huts, making our way to Porto. The city of Porto, with its narrow streets, astounding architecture, botanic gardens, and palatial villas all overlooking the Douro River, is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site! Our trip will include overnights with welcoming hosts in local manor homes. We will enjoy several wine tastings, plentiful breakfasts to start us on our way, all other meals, and a visit to one of Porto's port cellars. Our trip concludes with a relaxing walking tour of the city of Porto. This spectacular journey will certainly create lasting memories. We anticipate making new friends, as we explore the rugged hills, vineyards, coastal nature reserves and the vibrant city of Porto. During our time together we will enjoy and understand this region with a purpose rooted in the 3-tiered mission of the AMC: education, conservation, and appreciation of the natural world. We plan to observe and participate in the area's culture, and witness its history, all of it a moving tapestry woven from its unique geography and rich traditions.
