Adventures using the AMC's high hut system explore the rugged beauty of New Hampshire's White Mountains. Participants will learn about mountain ecology and public lands as they build camaraderie and conquer the challenge of New England's highest peaks. Activities include day hiking, trail work, and backpacking to the huts. Varied levels of outdoor experience and skills are welcome. All will enjoy this trip, which will emphasize the group experience as well as skills development. Accommodations: July 24 - Camp Dodge Trails Center July 25 - Camp Dodge Trails Center July 26 - Mizpah Springs Hut July 27 - Lakes of the Clouds Hut July 28 - Lakes of the Clouds Hut July 29 - Pick up at 3:00 pm Day 1 - Participants meet each other and the AMC staff at the Pinkham Notch Visitor's Center. The morning includes getting to know each other, covering logistics and expectations, and thoroughly checking personal gear. After lunch, the group heads out for a day hike in the area and then travels 5 miles down the road for the night at AMC's Camp Dodge Trails Center. Day 2 - Post hearty breakfast, the group will spend day two working on improving a hiking trail in need of upkeep. Trained Camp Dodge trail staff offers necessary safety guidelines as well as the tools and techniques of trail work. All group members help pack in lunch and tools to the trail work site, which will be selected with the group in mind. Days 3 - 6 After being transported to Crawford Notch, participants shoulder their packs full of clothes and lunches for four days of hiking surrounded by the region's fabulous forests, streams, and vistas. Night destinations include Mizpah Springs and Lakes of the Clouds Huts along the Southern Presidential Range with two nights at Lakes allowing for deeper exploration of the terrain above the trees. AMC's Hut Crews prepare breakfast and dinner. Participants pack personal gear, their sleeping bag, and lunches. Day six will find the group back at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center to wrap up their trip and say their good-byes. Camp Dodge and the High Huts have individual beds in non-gendered bunk rooms with bathrooms and individual stalls for changing and privacy. Bunk room size ranges from 4 to 16 bunks per room. Non-trip guests use the facility at the same time as Teen Wilderness groups. All facility guests will eat together and use shared facilities, like single-stall rest rooms. Teen Wilderness staff provide active oversight and will sleep near participants for supervisory purposes.
