Overview

Adventures based out of AMC's Cardigan Lodge are closer to Boston than the White Mountains but are equally rich in wilderness beauty and outdoor adventure. Cardigan Mountain State Park offers 5,655 wilderness acres surrounding Mount Cardigan's 3,121-foot treeless, granite summit with views of NH, ME, and VT. On this fun trip, participants will spend four nights in AMC's group campsites with days spent hiking to Welton Falls, engaging in well-loved trail work, and exploring the natural history of the area. We'll also practice canoe strokes and learn rescue skills while looking for wildlife on scenic waterways. Thought provoking discussions engage participants in articulating what public lands mean to them. Finally, the trip will culminate with a backcountry overnight to AMC's High Cabin near the spectacular summit of Mount Cardigan. Participants will help prepare and clean backcountry meals and learn camp skills as part of this experience. Night Locations: July 31 - Cardigan Lodge Group Camp Site August 1 - Cardigan Lodge Group Camp Site August 2 - Cardigan Lodge Group Camp Site August 3 - Cardigan Lodge Group Camp Site August 4 - AMC's Mount Cardigan High Cabin August 5 - Pick up at 3:00 pm Day 1 - Participants meet each other and the AMC staff at AMC's Cardigan Lodge. The morning includes getting to know each other, covering logistics and expectations, and thoroughly checking personal and group gear. After lunch, the group heads out for a day hike in the area and then transports their personal and group gear to a camp site located close to Cardigan Lodge. Day 2 - 4 - Staged out of their overnight base camp, these three days include canoeing on a local lake, participating in a day of trail work, and spending time with a local naturalist to learn about the great ecology of the area. Trained Camp Dodge trail staff offers necessary safety guidelines as well as the tools and techniques of trail work. All group members help pack in lunch and tools to the trail work site, which will be selected with the group in mind. Days 5 - 6 - In a culminating overnight backpacking trip, participants shoulder their packs full of clothes, meals, and sleeping gear and hike to AMC's High Cabin perched near the summit of Mount Cardigan. This bald summit's panoramic views will be enjoyed by all. On day six, the group returns to Cardigan Lodge to wrap up and say their good-byes. Cardigan's High Cabin has non-gendered bunk rooms with bathrooms for privacy. Teen Wilderness staff provide active oversight and will sleep near participants for supervisory purposes.
