Overview

This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to enrolled participants of that program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please email us at whp21@hb.amcboston.org or follow the link below. Mt Jackson's elevation is 4,052 feet with a moderately steep trail. The reward is a open summit with beautiful views into Crawford Notch and north to Mt. Washington. The trailhead begins in Crawford Notch close to the Highland Center. The hike is just over 5 miles (round trip) with 2,100 feet of elevation gain. We plan on a comfortable pace and hiking time will vary depending on the group, weather, and trail conditions. Participants will have an opportunity to practice winter hiking skills and use of gear in expected variable winter conditions. The last hundred or so feet to the summit is a hand scramble up ledges, fully exposed to the weather. As such, full winter gear is required for this trip, including snowshoes, crampons, and above-treeline face and eye protection. This is a Level 2/3 trip, participants will be expected to have at least one Level 1 or 2 WHP hikes or have comparable winter experience. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
