Overview

This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to enrolled participants of that program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please email us at whp21@hb.amcboston.org or follow the link below. The purpose of this trip is to gain experience and learn techniques for backpacking comfortably and safely in the backcountry in Winter. You'll experience the magic of camping in the snow at a beautiful site. We will hike along a relatively level trail off the Kancamaugus Highway for about 2 miles, and camp at a sheltered location along a brook. After setting up camp, we will climb to the summit of Mt. Passaconaway (about 3 additional miles and 2500' elevation gain) and then return to camp. We will practice Winter camping and cooking skills and learn strategies for body heat management while backpacking in Winter. On Sunday, we will hike out after breakfast. The proposed camp site (low elevation and only an hour from the road) will allow us to be more flexible on required gear than if we were camping at a more remote site. Pace will be moderate. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.

AMC Trip Policy

COVID 19 Information: As of December 1, 2021 AMC requires volunteers be vaccinated or receive a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the start of an event. AMC relies on the honor system for compliance. Participants may be required to wear masks, provide proof of vaccination, or in the alternative a current (within 72 hours) negative PCR test as a condition of attending this event. For your personal safety, you should expect to be in the presence of vaccinated and unvaccinated people in all AMC settings and should make choices about participating accordingly.

Leader

Stephen loves the outdoors, particularly in winter. He started hiking and backpacking as a teen and has not stopped since. He has hiked the NH 4000 footers several times in all seasons, and thru-hiked the AT in 2016. Stephen has led trips for the AMC for many years. He prefers backpacks (multi-day when his schedule allows), and hikes at a relaxed pace.

Eric has been a member of the AMC since 2016. He is an experienced four-season trip leader. Eric is very familiar with the White Mountains and has hiked all 67 of New England's 4,000 foot peaks, completed single-day Presidential Range Traverse and Pemi Loops, and has significant backpacking experience. His favorite hiking season is winter. When not leading hikes, Eric enjoys running, skiing, rock/ice climbing, going to concerts, and just about anything else that gets him out of the house.
