Overview

How does gliding though the woods on crystalline snow in the white beauty of winter sound? Have you thought of maybe nordic (or cross country) skiing, but never had the time, are not sure where to start, or don't know where good snow might be? We have a plan for you! Join the AMC Boston Chapter in partnership with Waterville Valley, NH resort for a "first day on skis" workshop. By the end of the day you will advance to a confident novice and be gliding along with us. With 70+ km of trails at an altitude of 1500 to 2300 ft, the Waterville Valley Nordic center is the largest nordic center to Boston and one of the higher ones in the Whites for generally good snow conditions. Whats the plan? 9:00 Arrive in Waterville Valley, NH via self driving/car pools (approx 2 hrs from Boston). Rent equipment, get trail pass, etc 9:45 Introductions with your AMC leaders and fellow skiers 10:00 Handoff to your certified Waterville Valley Nordic Instructors for group lessons (4-6 per group) 11:30 Lesson ends, lunch and socializing in Adventure Center (buy or bring pack lunch) - this may need to be outside for COVID 1:00pm Afternoon ski tour with AMC leaders who will split the group and provide tips to reinforce the instruction 3:30pm approx end day (trails close at 1600), return equipment, optional socializing Cost is $48 and will include equipment rental, the group lesson, trail pass and the afternoon ski tour and tips. Skiers will self pay Waterville Valley directly as per directions TBD from the leaders. Cancellation policy is per Waterville Valley Resort. How do I sign up and details? Click on the "register now" button on the trip listing and fill in the basic contact info and click through the E-waiver. The leaders will then contact you and give you info on how to finish your reservation with Waterville Valley. Be ready to answer with your height, weight (add 10-15 pounds for clothing and gear) and shoe size in Euro sizes (as in 38, 42, etc). In general, you should be prepared to be outside most of the day. Have a small rucksack or fanny pack with water, snack, extra hat extra gloves and a warm jacket (puffy down jackets are perfect) for when we are not as active. You will get quite warm or really cool off depending on how active you are. Later we will provide confirmed participants with detailed directions, facilitate car pools and gear list.

AMC Trip Policy

COVID 19 Information: As of December 1, 2021 AMC requires volunteers be vaccinated or receive a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the start of an event. AMC relies on the honor system for compliance. Participants may be required to wear masks, provide proof of vaccination, or in the alternative a current (within 72 hours) negative PCR test as a condition of attending this event. For your personal safety, you should expect to be in the presence of vaccinated and unvaccinated people in all AMC settings and should make choices about participating accordingly.

Mike Barry is a reformed alpine skier who leads multi day XC Ski tours in Maine, Quebec, Norway and the Whites with the Boston Chapter & Adventure Travel Committees. His favorite places to BC ski are Norway and Maine, and tracks is Quebec. Though he is overdue for a downhill trip to the French Alps (now on Telemark skis). Mike has been very involved in the Chapter and Club since 1998 and currently on the Adventure Travel Committee in addition to being an active chapter ski leader
