Overview

This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to enrolled participants of that program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please email us at whp21@hb.amcboston.org or follow the link below. The purpose of this two-day workshop is to learn the basics of winter above treeline hiking. The emphasis of the course will be on individual and group hiking techniques, safety, clothing, and the proper use of crampons and ice axes. We'll spend the first day of the workshop developing and practicing the skills we'll need for the second day during which we'll attempt to summit Mt. Washington via the winter Lion Head route. The workshop uses the slopes of Mt. Washington as a training area with Joe Dodge Lodge at Pinkham Notch as our base. Join us for an unforgettable experience above treeline in the White Mountains! To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.

Joe is one of the Boston Chapter's most experienced and active trip leaders - his summit visits number in the quadruple digits. Included among the many outings he leads each year for the Chapter's Hiking/Backpacking Committee are the single-day Presidential Range traverse on the summer solstice, and the Map & Compass course in the fall.
