WHP: East Osceola and Osceola (Level 3)

Date and Time

Saturday, February 19, 2022

New Hampshire, White Mountains,

Registration is required for this activity.

This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to enrolled participants of that program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please email us at or follow the link below. Mt. Oseola is in the Sandwich Range and it is known for the beautiful clifftop views overlooking Waterville Valley. We plan on hiking to the East peak (4156 ft.) and the Osceolas main peak (4340 ft.), both of which are on the official NH 4000 footer list. We hope to enjoy fantastic views from the main summit, but will need to earn them with a steep climb up East Osceola first. We will ascent the peaks from the Kancamagus via the Greeley Pond Trail and Mt. Osceola Trail, for a round trip of 7.6 miles with 3100 feet elevation gain, all at a moderate pace. After an easy 1.3 mile approach along the Greeley Pond Trail, we'll climb steeply to East Osceola, taking our time as we go, and then follow the ridge to Mt. Osceola before returning the way we came, As a reward for making the slow climb up, you can enjoy glissading on the way down. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.

Stephen loves the outdoors, particularly in winter. He started hiking and backpacking as a teen and has not stopped since. He has hiked the NH 4000 footers several times in all seasons, and thru-hiked the AT in 2016. Stephen has led trips for the AMC for many years. He prefers backpacks (multi-day when his schedule allows), and hikes at a relaxed pace.
