Overview

AMC's Reeves Meadow Visitor Center, in Harriman State Park, is looking for new "Information Volunteers" to greet visitors in a friendly manner, orient them to the Visitor Center, offer recommendations for hiking trails and other activities available in Harriman State Park, give driving directions, provide information about conservation and natural history, and promote AMC's mission and opportunities at AMC facilities in the Park and in the greater NY/NJ region. Volunteers are stationed outside at a welcome table when weather allows. Each volunteer is asked to commit to volunteering for at least 4 mornings throughout the summer season, and more often if interested in additional volunteer shifts. Ideally, volunteers will plan on volunteering at Reeves Meadow and/or other AMC locations for at least 3 years. Reeves Meadow Information Volunteers are also welcome to volunteer at AMC's Corman Harriman Outdoor Center, located just a few miles away (also within Harriman State Park). Key Qualifications: Extensive experience visiting the park, including hiking popular trails as well as navigating park roads and the surrounding area; knowledge of essential hiking gear and backcountry safety; an outgoing, friendly personality; and the ability to communicate well with a diverse group of visitors and staff. Additional Qualifications: Volunteers must provide their own transportation, be at least 18 years old, be fully vaccinated for Covid, and pass a criminal background check. Volunteer Season & Schedule: Two volunteer shifts are available each weekend morning during July and August: Saturday 8:00am to 12:00pm and Sunday 8:00am to 12:00pm. Volunteers are welcome to stay into the afternoon if they would like a longer shift. Accommodations: Most volunteers live close enough to Reeves Meadow to easily commute. Volunteers who live farther away may be able to bring a tent and camp on a staff tent platform at the nearby Corman Harriman Outdoor Center. Training: Training includes a few online sessions in May as well as an in-person training on Sunday, May 22nd. Learn More: Reach out to Kyra Salancy, AMC's Outdoor Program Centers Volunteer Coordinator, at ksalancy@outdoors.org.
