Overview

Spend a week with a crew of 8 and an AMC Trails staff member working on trails in Baxter State Park. Enjoy satisfying work, the company of fellow stewards, and a beautiful setting. SCHEDULE: This program begins at 4pm on Sunday at a central location in Baxter State Park. An orientation and a meet and greet on the ride to the camp site will get you started, then camp setup and dinner. Monday through Thursday, the crew will be at the worksite. There may be a hike of up to 2 miles and 1000 feet of elevation gain to the site, and the workday will typically run 6-8 hours. There may be time afterward to hike, relax, or go for a swim in one of Baxter's many ponds. Friday is an optional recreation day, where you are free to explore the park and will have access to your car. Departure time is 9am on Saturday morning. THE WORK: The crew will be working on a section of trail identified by the Baxter State Park trails supervisor. The project may involve installing timber bog bridges, performing maintenance on drainage structures, brushing back vegetation, or other trail maintenance projects. Crews work rain or shine, barring dangerous conditions, so please come prepared with clothing you can get dirty in and good rain gear! The hike and work can be strenuous, but this crew is designed to engage volunteers with no prior trail work experience. Transportation is provided by van to and from the project trailhead. ACCOMODATIONS: The crew will camp at a designated, car-accessible campsite, with tent platforms, an untreated water source, and privy access. AMC will provide tents (though you are welcome to bring your own), water purification, and all cooking gear and food, including stoves and propane, Meals will be a group affair, with everyone rotating cooking, prep, and dish duty. Lunch will be made in the morning and eaten on-trail. RECREATION: Baxter State Park has many opportunities for recreation - enjoy the mountain streams, quiet bogs, and ponds with mountain views, or go for a hike up one of Baxter's many peaks. Please note that as of February 2022, all participants must be fully vaccinated by the CDC's definition to participate on AMC trips. If this is not possible, participants can opt to take a PCR or Antigen test 72 hours prior to trip departure. Negative results will be accepted in place of vaccination. If this policy changes, registrants will be notified.
