Registration is required for this activity.

(best time to call: 9am - 5pm, Monday - Saturday)

Spend a week on a small boat-accessible island off the coast of Maine with a crew of 6 and an AMC trails staff member working to clear a trail network. Enjoy satisfying work, the company of fellow stewards, a beautiful setting, and the peace and quiet of an island. SCHEDULE: This program will begin on Monday morning at 8:45 am on the mainland, where you will meet your crew at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School on Wheeler Bay and get introduced. At 9am you'll load the boat up and take an hourlong boat ride to Burnt Island, where you will cook dinner on a propane two-burner stove with your crew and settle in to your small, shared cabin. Monday through Thursday, the crew will spend days working, walking from the cabin to the worksite. Workdays typically run 6-8 hours. There may be time afterward to hike, relax, or go for a dip in the ocean. Friday is an optional recreation day, where you are free to explore the island. On Friday after lunch, a boat will pick up the crew. On Friday afternoon at 3pm, you will arrive back on the mainland. THE WORK: The crew will be working on a project that may involve clearing drainage ditches, brushing back vegetation, elevating trail tread, and clearing trails and shoreline. Crews work rain or shine. The work can be strenuous and may involve carrying material for some distance, but the crew is designed to engage volunteers with no prior trial work experience. ACCOMMODATIONS: The island has a single-room cabin available to volunteers furnished with 6 cots and a large table for meal preparation, with good views of the ocean. AMC will provide water and all camp gear and food, including stoves and propane. Meals will be a group affair, with everyone rotating cooking, prep, and dish duty. Lunch will be made in the morning and eaten on-trail. RECREATION: Burnt Island has a trail network of its own, traveling through quiet forested areas and traveling along oceanside cliffs. Hiking, sketching, reading, and swimming are all great options on this quiet island. Please note that as of February 2022, all participants must be fully vaccinated by the CDC's definition to participate on AMC trips. If this is not possible, participants can opt to take a PCR test 72 hours prior to trip departure. Negative results will be accepted in place of vaccination. If this policy changes, registrants will be notified.
