Gain the necessary skills to plan and execute a long-distance hike. Whether it's a months-long endeavor on the Appalachian Trail, or a shorter adventure on the Long Trail, we'll focus on hikes ranging from 2 weeks to 6+ months with a special emphasis on East Coast long trails. This program will cover everything from the long-distance hikes to choose from and the logistics of completing a hike to the gear and know-how you'll need on the trail. The course will be led by AMC guides who have completed thru-hikes of their own. They'll share their own stories, and help you learn from their sometime hard-won lessons. Come learn new outdoors skills to get yourself one step closer to checking that hike off your bucket list, and enjoy great hiking among good company. This program is largely classroom-based, but does include guided hikes to break up classroom time. Participants will learn: What is long-distance hiking and what trails are suitable for long-distance hiking Logistical considerations, including map and guide books, seasons to hike, budgets, resupplies, etc. Planning for food and what to eat on the trail Gear basics and suggestions Realities of the trail, trail culture, and staying motivated Leave No Trace outdoor ethics COVID-19 Response AMC's COVID response priorities are safety, transparency, and mission.
