AMC's Outdoor Guides introduce backpacking skills such as backcountry travel considerations, Leave No Trace ©, map & compass, campsite cooking and set-up to active adults during this late fall adventure. Both nights are spent at the AMC Highland Center with hikes and clinics offered both Saturday and Sunday. This weekend will set you up with the knowledge and skills for your first backpacking trip. Overnights are spent in the Highland Center Lodge, not in the backcountry. Participants will learn outdoor skills: Hiking Safety with seasonal considerations (stream crossings, snow, ice, inclement weather) Map & Compass: Learning to plan routes, pace hikes, read maps, orient maps based on land features and compass direction, taking and following bearings, and more. Camp Kitchen: Equipment used for water purification, cooking backcountry meals, and creating a backcountry kitchen; recipes and demonstrations. Equipment for backpacking: covering choosing and fitting backpacks, tent/shelter options, sleeping bags, gear repair, clothing, first aid, etc. Natural history Guided Hikes COVID-19 Response AMC's COVID response priorities are safety, transparency, and mission. We continue to follow the science and recommendations from CDC. This includes a vaccination requirement for all participants in this program. Exemptions: AMC understands that medical or religious exemptions must be considered. Those to whom medical or religious exemptions apply must receive a negative PCR test result within 72 hours of the start of this program.
