Interested in becoming a four-season hiker? The trails do not disappear when the snow falls; winter is a fabulous time for hiking if you have the skills, interest, and the appropriate gear. This weekend is designed for adults seeking to learn new, or brush up on outdoor skills and enjoy the late fall/ early winter season. Participants will learn essential skills such as: hiking safety, map reading and basic compass skills, Leave No Trace©, how to pack a pack, the basics of traction and pole use- all with a seasonal focus. Snowshoes and trail crampons can be borrowed if needed. Whether you'd like to feel more comfortable planning a day hike or a multiday backpacking trip, having the skills and confidence in your planning will make a huge difference to your success and enjoyment. This program includes a mixture of classroom sessions and on trail learning. We will have two full days of outdoors activities and instruction. Participants will learn outdoor skills: Hiking Safety with seasonal considerations (stream crossings, snow, ice, inclement weather) Map reading How to pack a pack and what to carry with a seasonal focus Which traction to use for conditions Leave No Trace Natural history COVID-19 Response AMC's COVID response priorities are safety, transparency, and mission. We continue to follow the science and recommendations from CDC. This includes a vaccination requirement for all participants in this program. Exemptions: AMC understands that medical or religious exemptions must be considered. Those to whom medical or religious exemptions apply must receive a negative PCR test result within 72 hours of the start of this program.
