Joe Dodge Lodge,
New Hampshire, White Mountains,
This adventure is designed for active adults in search of a fun early winter experience and introduction to AMC Backcountry Huts in the winter. Our trip begins with an orientation session and overnight at AMC's full service Joe Dodge Lodge in Pinkham Notch before we strap on our snowshoes or micro spikes and trek to AMC's backcountry hut in Carter Notch on Saturday morning. Exploring the forest, listening for wintertime birds and investigating animal tracks along the way give us ample opportunity to experience Carter Notch during this quiet season. One night is spent at the hut preparing a group dinner, checking out the night sky and learning about winter ecology in the White Mountains. The terrain is a moderate, sometimes steep 3.8 miles climb to the hut and the pace will be comfortable with plenty of time to explore and learn. Winter Lodge to Hut trips are designed for the experienced 3 season hiker looking to venture into world of winter. Participants must be comfortable carrying a pack over moderate terrain and sometimes steep terrain. Our planned mode of travel is on snowshoes or trail crampons (they can be borrowed from AMC if needed), but please keep in mind that conditions can be variable. Participants must be willing/able to carry their personal clothing and sleeping bag plus group food for 3.8 miles to and from Carter Notch Hut. Hut accommodations are rustic with wood stove heat for the common space and cooking facilities. Bunk rooms are not heated. Program Highlights: Group of active adults and experienced AMC Guides Focus on beginner winter skills Group experience Night sky observations Natural history explorations including animal tracking COVID-19 Response AMC's COVID response priorities are safety, transparency, and mission. We continue to follow the science and recommendations from CDC. This includes a vaccination requirement for all participants in this program. Exemptions: AMC understands that medical or religious exemptions must be considered. Those to whom medical or religious exemptions apply must receive a negative PCR test result within 72 hours of the start of this program.
To provide an environment that allows AMC Outdoor Programs to continue to operate during the pandemic while mitigating risk for all group members and staff, we have modified our operations based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), input from AMC's medical advisor, and in response to specific guidance in the states we operate. Based on specific program attributes, AMC will require program participants be fully vaccinated, or share the results of a negative PCR COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of your program start. Any COVID-19 vaccine approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) is an acceptable vaccine for the purposes of this policy. View the fully vaccinated definition as determined by the CDC. While individuals participating in programs will be required to verify vaccination status or share a negative COVID test result, participants should expect to be in the presence of both vaccinated and unvaccinated guests at AMC facilities, including bunk rooms and dining areas. Participants seeking accommodation based on religious or medical reasons may be subject to additional protocols beyond testing. This includes the potential for mandatory masking when maintaining social distance is not possible.
