Englewood Cliffs, Bergen County, NJ - Boat Basin at Palisades Interstate Park,
New Jersey, Central,
Be part of a large group of other conservation-minded individuals and organizations cleaning debris from a shoreline. Marine debris can injure or kill marine and coastal wildlife; damage and degrade habitats; degrade the quality of life in coastal communities (who likes to go to an ocean/river/lakeshore and see debris?), and threaten human health and safety. Clean Ocean Action has been conducting twice-yearly beach cleanups since 1985, growing from one site in 1985 to over 10,000 volunteers in 2018 and this year over 70 sites in New Jersey. See Related Links below for their most recent (2020) annual report. We will be volunteering at a site at the base of the Palisades on the shore of the Hudson River (yes, there are beaches on the Hudson River) in Englewood Cliffs. There are great views of the Bronx, George Washington Bridge, and the Manhattan skyline. This is the same location we were at for previous beach cleanups. Volunteers will record data about the type and quantity of debris. This valuable data is used to advance federal, state, and local programs to reduce litter. The cleanup runs from 9:00 (check-in) to 12:30, rain or shine. Bring water, gloves, a pail for collecting debris if you can (that will reduce the number of plastic garbage bags needed), and wear appropriate footwear. After the cleanup, stay for a lunch provided by the Conservation Committee. Access to the site is easy. There is a large parking lot for drivers. Non-drivers can take public transportation over the George Washington Bridge or along route 9W, and then walk down the road to the base of the Palisades. Registration for this event is required by both the AMC and Clean Ocean Action. After you register with us we will send you information on how to register with Clean Ocean Action. Any questions? Please contact either of the leaders.
COVID 19 Information: As of December 1, 2021 AMC requires volunteers be vaccinated or receive a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the start of an event. AMC relies on the honor system for compliance. Participants may be required to wear masks, provide proof of vaccination, or in the alternative a current (within 72 hours) negative PCR test as a condition of attending this event. For your personal safety, you should expect to be in the presence of vaccinated and unvaccinated people in all AMC settings and should make choices about participating accordingly.
