Overview

This is a three night scouting trip to visit some of the remote ponds and lakes in the Moose River Plains area of the Adirondacks near Inlet NY. We will camp at a free, first come first served roadside campsite. From there we will go out and ride our bikes on generally sandy back roads. We will periodically either bike to those remote ponds and lakes or stash our bikes in the woods and day hike in from there. Areas to be explored include Falls Pond, Indian Lake, Beaver Lake & Mitchell Ponds. To register for this event click on the register link, you will be taken to the original listing where you can then register. This trip is to prepare for a bike-packing trip to one of these remote locations in October. Distances will be in the range of 20 miles per day on bikes and up to 6 miles on out and back hiking. The riding speed and hiking pace will be slow to moderate. We are out to have fun rather than to get in shape. The trip is open to families. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. **Maria Stephens is a bicycling leader in training under the supervision of David Mong who is the leader of record.** Relaxed: Suitable for most active participants with full mobility and participants new to the activity described. Expect to be actively on the move for about 3 hours/day. You may be on the trail, slopes or water for a longer time, but there will be plenty of rest breaks. The leader will be arriving the night before and you are welcome to join him. We will go on a ride before the rest of the group arrives. Leader has lots of experience in this area but not for all the places we plan to go. Helmet, bright vest, spare tube and tools to repair your bike are required. The roads will have some traffic and we are a one hour drive away from cell service. All participants must attest they are vaccinated before they will be approved for a spot.

AMC Trip Policy

Leader

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.

Leader

I've been hiking and backpacking pretty much my entire life. I've planned and executed adventure trips for groups, including Scouts for years. My goal is to spend as much time off the pavement as possible. My challenge is to convince others to join me.

Co-Leader

Maria Stephens grew up in Northern Massachusetts and continues to hike and kayak extensively throughout New England and upstate New York. She has hiked in China, Tibet, Scotland, Iceland, Norway, the Faroe and Orkney Islands, and Germany and has biked across the southern half of Ireland, from Shannon to Dublin. Maria is a member of AMC's NY/NJ, Maine, and Potomac chapters through which she leads both kayaking and hiking activities. She is working toward becoming a Maine Guide.
