Overview

The Hammersley Wild Area lies within the Susquehannock State Forest and is known for its beautiful forests and streams. Trekkers remark about solitude, quietude, and dark evening skies given it is the largest roadless area in Pennsylvania. There are 50+ miles of marked hiking trails including a 9-mile portion of the Susquehannock Trail System (STS). To register for this event click on the register link, you will be taken to the original listing where you can then register. On this trip we will explore a section of the STS beginning at Cross Fork, Pennsylvania. On Friday we will hike north on the STS for about four miles or so, which includes a 1400' climb, and look for a nice stream-side spot to set up a base camp. A day hike is planned for Saturday where we will continue north on the STS and then retrace our steps back to our campsite. If weather permits, we will stop for a swim at the Hammersley Pool. Total distance for day two will be seven or eight miles. On Sunday we will hike four miles or so back to our cars. Total distance for this outing will be between 15 and 16 miles. This program is open to families. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Moderate: Suitable for those with recent similar experience and/or demonstrated proficiency, such as being active in sports or often (regular) engagement in moderate physical activity. Ability to perform at the expected level for back-to-back days for multiday trips. Expect to be active up to 5-6 hours per day, with brief breaks. There are sections of the trail that are narrow, steep, rocky and root filled and in addition, have steep drop-offs. Bear canisters or Ursacks are required. All participants must attest to having been vaccinated prior to being approved to participate.

Leader

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.
