Overview

Hosted by Dr. Laura Marx, Climate Solutions Scientist, The Nature Conservancy in Massachusetts. "Forests are a critical natural climate solution in Massachusetts, helping to remove carbon pollution from fossil fuels from the air and directly address climate change. But forests are valuable for many reasons, carbon being just one of them. What type of forest management balances the need to store carbon with other values like biodiversity, forest resilience to the impacts of climate change, and the need to produce local, sustainable forest products? Many stakeholders in Massachusetts and Vermont have spent the past two years researching a set of climate-smart forest practices, detailed in the Healthy Forests for our Future guide at nature.org/climatesmartforestne. Because many of these practices require the purchase of materials, or an opportunity cost in leaving more carbon in the forest or waiting longer between harvests, the guide also explains several ways landowners can be paid to do climate-smart forestry. One of these options for payment has just launched in Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York. This talk will cover both the set of climate-smart forest practices and the details of the Family Forest Carbon Program as a new market-based program to help landowners cover the costs of this type of forest management".
