Oxford Marsh of the Chicopee River (directions to be given upon registration),
Massachusetts, Connecticut River Valley,
Join us to help stop the invasive water chestnut from spreading within the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts. Great strides have already been made at keeping this plant in check, so come help maintain this progress! Date and Time Sunday, June 26, 2022, begining with an orientation and harvesting water chestnut from 1:00 pm - 3:45, back on shore by 3:45 to move plants and pack up. Leave by about 4:15 - 4:30 pm Registration Registration is required for this activity. Please contact Leader to express interest and gain details about what to expect, what to bring and wear, etc. Indicate your level of paddling proficiency and if you have space for another participant in your canoe. Kayakers are also welcome (see overview). Teens from 14 - 17 yrs can attend if accompanied by a parent. Overview Easy paddle on flatwater to pull invasive water chestnut, a plant that impairs wildlife habitat and could easily take over our waters, making boating, swimming and fishing nearly impossible. The Oxford Marsh is a little-known gem in the Chicopee River, with a lot of coves and marshes to explore while harvesting. We will be putting in and taking out at the same launch site. Bring your own clean canoe or kayak, though a space in another participant's canoe may be available. We can work together to help offload plants from kayaks to canoes, if needed. (Buckets for open cockpits are provided.) Basic paddling proficiency is required and ability to lift 20-30 pound bags is preferred. You can fill bags to meet your personal weight limitations. Leaning, lifting and turning to pull plants and move buckets and bags of plants is involved. Wearing PFD is required; bring snack & water. More details supplied upon registation. Supplies for the harvesting will be provided. Heavy rain cancels. This event is in collaboration with the Chicopee 4Rivers Watershed Council (C4R) and the Connecticut River Conservancy. The event is one of many in the Connecticut River watershed as numerous organizations and volunteers are working to keep water chestnut from spreading in the watershed.
COVID 19 Information: As of December 1, 2021 AMC requires volunteers be vaccinated or receive a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the start of an event. AMC relies on the honor system for compliance. Participants may be required to wear masks, provide proof of vaccination, or in the alternative a current (within 72 hours) negative PCR test as a condition of attending this event. For your personal safety, you should expect to be in the presence of vaccinated and unvaccinated people in all AMC settings and should make choices about participating accordingly.
