Overview

The charming French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe beckon us to their beautiful beaches, invite us to the lushness and intrigue of their national park, and offer a foodie's dream, the "nouvelle cuisine Creole." Indeed, these islands, which together have been designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, are a bit of a secret: less crowded and more affordable than other islands, yet virtually unheard-of among Americans. As the travel writer and editor, Ann Abel, writes, "They're undiscovered. Even during the height of tourism season, they aren't a place where it feels like everything revolves around tourism…. And then there's the nature. The two largest islands, Grand-Terre and Basse-Terre, are close enough to be connected by a short bridge, and together their outlines form the wings of a butterfly. If that's not enough poetic nature, the native people who first inhabited this land called it Karukera, meaning 'the place of beautiful waters.'" Together, we will experience Guadeloupe's stunning rainforest, soft-sand beaches in several different shades of color, award-winning Mémorial ACTe museum dedicated to the memory of enslaved people around the world, and strong food culture and French-Creole cuisine. While we will seek out adventure - hiking to waterfalls, to an active volcano, and along its picturesque coastline - our holiday also includes time for rest and relaxation, walks on the beach and staring at the sea, beverages pool-side, and gorging on fresh croissants, pains au chocolat, baguettes, and cheese. (You're in France!) For our 7-day idyllic 'in style' holiday, we have arranged comfortable, colorful, eco-chic accommodations, group meals that highlight the local cuisine, and a special dinner on New Year's Eve. Join us on this unique AMC Adventure Travel holiday-week adventure!
