Wake up to lions roaring in the distance (or perhaps very near). Go to sleep with the sounds of elephants trumpeting for their young to come close for the night. In Swahili "safari" means journey, and what a journey we will have on this 14-day epic adventure in Africa with unforgettable memories for you and your loved ones. Our time in Tanzania will begin in Arusha learning about the local culture, which includes a visit to an elementary school so the kids can interact with their African peers. We will also do a short, guided hike on the slopes of Mt. Meru around 6,000 feet. Then we will leave the city behind and spend days 3-9 on safari following the migration of various animals in Lake Manyara National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. Expect to see elephants, buffaloes, hippos, lions, rhinos, giraffes, gazelles, zebras, golden jackals, spotted hyenas, and hundreds of bird species. If we are lucky, we will also find some elusive leopards. Not all of our time will be spent in safari vehicles - we will also do a hunt on foot with the Hadzabe bush men, one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa, and visit a Masai Bomba to hear traditional songs and dance. We will finish our trip with three days in Zanzibar, a city on the coast of the Indian Ocean. We will go on a spice tour, eat our way through the Forodhani food market, watch the sun set from a boat on the Indian Ocean, and explore Stone Town, a historic trade center with Swahili and Islamic influences. Its winding lanes present minarets, carved doorways and 19th-century landmarks such as the House of Wonders, a former sultan's palace. There will be free time to go snorkeling or relax by the beach. The trip fee is $5,995 for adults and $4,250 for children 6-15. This includes accommodations in hotels, lodges and semi-luxurious safari camps; round trip flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar and Zanzibar to Arusha; all mentioned tours, guides, and entrance fees; and, some service tips. All breakfasts, most lunches and dinners are included. There will be a group flight from Amsterdam to Arusha and back for approximately $1000, but you will need to fly to the Netherlands from your home destination with guidance from the leaders. This trip is suitable for kids 6+ but not recommended for children who need car seats as we will be in safari vehicles.
