Overview

Please join the WMA, JDEI committee's webinar with Marinel de Jesus, who will be sharing her early experiences as a hiker/backpacker in the U.S. grappling with the lack of diversity and inclusion in the American outdoors. Five years later, as a global mountain nomad and a social entrepreneur, Marinel utilizes the wisdom she gained as a human rights lawyer, woman of color, and an immigrant to design adventure/hiking tours worldwide by forging meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships with indigenous communities and women in Peru, Tanzania, and Mongolia as a means to create systemic changes that will pave the way for an inclusive and equitable trekking tourism & adventure travel industry. Even as a woman of color, striving to create successful partnerships with marginalized groups has its set of unique challenges. What are the ways that we can affect change as individuals and/or as organizations? From this presentation, you will learn ways to cultivate an equity-driven mindset that will help you become an effective advocate for JEDI. This talk will incorporate some of the guidelines that are outlined in the previously written article, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: 26 Ways (& More) to be an Ally in the Outdoor Industry.
