Interested in getting outdoors more this winter? The Hiking & Backpacking Committee's 2022-23 Winter Hiking Program (WHP) teaches participants the skills and knowledge needed to safely and enjoyably hike in New England during the winter. WHP participants will attend live lectures led by AMC Boston Chapter Hiking/Backpacking Leaders, and then have the chance to try out their skills through a series of instructional hikes held throughout the winter months. ***REGISTRATION OPENS 10/13 AT 8PM*** Unlike the past few years, the WHP instructional sessions are returning to the live, in-class format, and will be held at a Boston area location from 7pm to 9pm on the following dates: November 2 November 9 November 16 November 30 December 7 Class instruction topics include heat management and winter hiking clothing, group hiking techniques, energy management and nutrition, winter travel and snowshoeing, winter safety and injury prevention, above tree-line hiking, non-technical use of ice axe and crampons, winter weather, camping techniques & equipment, back-country food prep and more. Class instruction includes numerous "breakout sessions", with hands-on opportunities to observe and learn about winder hiking and backpacking gear. There will be numerous hikes and weekend trips offered exclusively or preferentially to participants in this class to help participants put learning into practice. This is also a great opportunity to meet lots of other people who love hiking and enjoy the outdoors! A participant's place is the program will be secure upon receipt of payment (provided program availability remains). Refunds for cancellation will be offered up to one week prior to program start.

AMC Trip Policy

COVID-19 Information: Updated November 2022. AMC requires volunteers be vaccinated or receive a negative result of a COVID-19 antigen test taken within 24 hours of the start of an event. AMC relies on the honor system for compliance. Participants may be required to wear masks, provide proof of vaccination, or in the alternative a result of a COVID-19 antigen test taken within 24 hours of the start of an event. Photo documentation may be required as a condition of attending this event. For your personal safety, you should expect to be in the presence of vaccinated and unvaccinated people in all AMC settings and should make choices about participating accordingly.

Eric has been a member of the AMC since 2016. As an experienced four-season trip leader, Eric is very familiar with the White Mountains and has hiked all 67 of New England's 4,000 foot peaks, including the all of New Hampshire's 4000 footers in winter. He has completed single-day Presidential Traverse and Pemi Loops, and has significant backpacking experience both locally and in the western US. His favorite hiking season is winter. Eric also enjoys running, skiing, rock/ice climbing, a cycling.
