Leader Development Series - Above Treeline Workshop

Date and Time

Saturday, January 28, 2023 - Sunday, January 29, 2023

Gorham, NH,
New Hampshire, White Mountains,
NH United States

Registration is required for this activity.

This hike is intended for existing Boston chapter three-season leaders and leaders-in-training with winter experience who wish to further develop their winter skills in preparation for winter leading and co-leading. Participants should have completed their AMC leader training program, and have, or be able to rent, the requisite gear and experience for an above-treeline winter hike. See the required gear section for details on required gear. The emphasis of the course will be on individual and group hiking techniques, safety, clothing, and the proper use of crampons and ice axes. Day 1 of the workshop will be spent developing the skills (such as self arrest) that we'll need for the second day during which we'll attempt to summit Mt. Washington via the winter Lion Head route. Participants must have the stamina to accomplish a 8+ mile hike with 4300' of elevation gain over steep, strenuous terrain in snowy and icy winter conditions, along with significant prior winter hiking experience including snowshoe and microspike technique. There are a few short, steep and exposed sections on the Lion Head route so participants should be comfortable with those types of trails. Joe Dodge Lodge will be our base of operations. Thanks to its location right at the Tuckerman Ravine trailhead in Pinkham Notch, there will be zero car logistics for the weekend once we arrive. This is a full service lodge -- heat, beds, linens, bathrooms, towels, running water, living room and dining room. We will be sleeping in 4-person bunkrooms reserved exclusively for our group. The program fee covers lodging Saturday night, Saturday Dinner, and Sunday breakfast at Joe Dodge. Cancellation: The fee is NOT refundable unless we are able to fill your spot with another qualified, paying participant. A refundable payment is required to hold a spot on the Wait List. The workshop begins Saturday morning and ends late Sunday afternoon. All leaders and participants must bring a mask on the hike for emergency purposes but are not required to wear it during hiking. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out
