Overview

The Town of Lancaster Conservation Commission, The Northern Forest Center, and the Appalachian Mountain Club are teaming up to develop a new recreational trail network on the Lancaster Town Forest in Lancaster, NH! The Town Forest is located just 1 mile from Main Street Lancaster, NH and will provide a wealth of recreational opportunities and a chance to experience the Great North Woods close to town. Participants will be helping to establish a new non-motorized recreational loop trail within the Lancaster Town Forest. The day-long workshop will start with an introduction to basic trail work tools, safety, and proper tool use. Then the group will engage in a variety of trail work activities such as removal of small trees/shrubs, digging and raking the trail treadway, cutting out fallen trees and larger woody debris, and installing drainage structures. Participants will be using pruning saws, loppers, hand clippers, hazel hoes, rakes, and other similar digging and cutting hand tools. The group will learn from experienced Appalachian Mountain Club Trails Department staff about the essentials of new trail layout, construction, and long-term maintenance. While this day-long workshop is open to everyone, we are particularly interested in individuals that may be looking for a more consistent and long-term trail volunteer opportunities with the Lancaster Conservation Commission as a Trail Maintainer for the Town Forest Loop Trail. Join us to kick off the construction of the Town Forest Loop Trail this fall! This is the initial project work that will lead to more construction and eventual completion in 2024. We will be meeting on Summer Street in Lancaster next to the community fields near the corner of Cemetery Street. There is ample parking along the community fields on Summer Street. The group will have approximately a 1 mile hike to get to the Town Forest following along a Snowmobile corridor. Please be prepared for potentially wet conditions for the hike in, it has been a rainy summer. After the hike in the group will start working on the construction of the new Town Forest Loop Trail. Please bring lunch, water, snacks, and clothing appropriate for being outdoors, as well as this required personal protective equipment (PPE), which will be worn at all times during the workshop: Hard Hat (provided by AMC at workshop) Eye Protection (provided by AMC at workshop) Gloves (provided by AMC if needed) Sturdy Boots Long Work Pants Long Sleeve Shirt
