Overview

Join Julia Watson and Denis McCartan for an almost full moon overnighter at the Rausch Gap Shelter. We will meet at 4:30PM at the Trout Run parking lot located off Rt 72, close to where it changes into Rt 443, in Swatara State Park (Parking area GPS 40.482232, -76.545220) and then car pool to the Sand Springs parking area. After a 3.5 mile hike we will spend the night comfortably next to our camp fire at the Rausch Gap shelter. Hopefully it will be a clear night and we will be bathed in the autumn translucence of the Beaver Moon. The full moon is actually the previous (Thanksgiving) night but Fiiday night will still have 94% illumination. Following morning, Saturday, we will wake, have breakfast and hike the 6 miles back to Trout Run and our cars in plenty of time for lunch. Suitable for beginner cool weather backpackers. Dress in layers and bring a pad and bag. Thermos with a hot drink is a great idea too in addition to snacks and breakfast. in adition to the AT shelter there will be plenty of tent space, if desired. Only heavy rain and/ or icy roads will cancel.
