New Hampshire, White Mountains,
NH
Join us for a strenuous hike to Mt. Jefferson (5,713'), the third-tallest of the four thousand footers. We will hike Mt. Jefferson via a particularly challenging route, ascending via the Castle Ravine Trail and descending via the Castle Trail. Expect an approximately 10-mile loop hike with approximately 4,250' of elevation gain on rough, steep terrain at a pace on the fast side of moderate. Castle Ravine is relatively lightly-hiked and particularly attractive in its own right-never mind the incredible view from the summit of Mt. Jefferson! NOTE: while Castle Ravine and the Castle Ravine Trail are beautiful and highly scenic, the Castle Ravine Trail is among the most difficult trails in the White Mountains. The lower portion of the Castle Ravine Trail features some challenging water crossings. The upper portion of the trail then ascends the very steep Castle Ravine headwall over loose talus, gaining approximately 1,300' in just 0.7 miles. Due to the steepness and strenuousness of this hike, participants must have recent experience hiking other "Terrifying 25" or similarly-strenuous trails and must maintain a regular, robust cardiovascular fitness regimen. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. We will hold Sunday, June 9 a backup date for this hike if weather conditions prohibit us from hiking on June 8.
