This small group of participants will spend the entire weekend on map and compass skills. Topics will include: reading the topographic map; learning the parts and design of the compass; using the map to plan a route; identifying all the features to be seen along the way; using compass indoors as protractor to take bearings from the map and plan a route; outside instruction and activities to practice compass skills, putting all the pieces together and laying out a bushwhack route; taking back bearings; triangulation to find you position or identify distant mountains or lakes from a high view point. The group will complete their learning by going out and following the bushwhack route. Also included will be some review of general mountain hiking safety, clothing, equipment. Intended for individuals with high interest in learning map and compass skills. Anticipate hiking as much as 3 miles at a slow pace with occasional uphill grades. This workshop will begin promptly at 7:30pm on Friday evening, ending Sunday afternoon at approximately 4:30pm. Cost is $290members, $310 /non-members and includes lodging, excellent meals, materials, and instruction. Must be 18 years or older to attend.
