Do you want to learn how to lead outdoor activities or are you a leader looking to refresh your leadership skills? The Potomac Chapter will host an AMC Outdoor Leadership Training Workshop over the weekend of May 4-5, 2024, at the Calleva Riley's Lock location in Poolesville, MD and at Little Bennett Regional Park in Clarksburg, MD. Everyone is welcome to attend - new leaders, new members, experienced leaders, and people who want to learn what leading a trip is about! Our experiential method of training will include large and small group discussions and will also get participants outdoors engaging in mock scenarios. Not only is this an effective approach to learning - it is a fun and memorable way to learn! Our goal for the weekend is to have leaders fully trained at leader level 1 by the time we end on Sunday - this means they will be qualified to lead accessible or relaxed activities (see link to difficulty ratings below), and on the path to lead higher level activities, if desired. During the training, you will be able to connect with current leaders and become part of the Potomac Chapter family. Topics covered are the elements of outdoor leadership common to all AMC outdoor activities, including: * Activity planning; * Leading safe and enjoyable activities; * Leadership Approaches; * Risk Prevention; * Liability issues; * Accident scene management; * Immersion in numerous role-play scenarios; * Conservation and minimum impact issues; and * AMC leadership requirements. Your instructors are experienced AMC volunteer leaders and staff. Free for AMC members, or $30 for non-members. If you need overnight accommodation, there are several options nearby including developed camping (30 minutes) and or many hotels (20 minutes). Contact Lisa Novins (email above) for additional information.
